Videos & QR Codes in the Library

Videos and QR codes are more tools that are beneficial for students and teachers in the library. YouTube provides endless videos that students and teachers can search for to learn about a specific topic and get directions how to do a task. Animoto allows users to easily create videos from photos and video clips. QR codes give students access to content with a quick scan.

YouTube

YouTube is a great tool for any educator, including librarians. The videos on YouTube can be helpful to librarians in many ways. There are videos that librarians can use to show students about topics they are learning about in the classroom. There are procedural, how-to videos that students can be shown to learn how to do a task. YouTube is also beneficial for librarians to access other library channels to learn how to do things in the libraries as well as inspiration for ideas. Here are some great videos for students from library channels on YouTube.

Calypso Gilstrap Channel

YouTube videos are also a great way to promote your library. I plan to use YouTube to promote my library by creating and posting videos that showcase some of the great things happening in my library including makerspaces, fun, interactive lessons, family nights, and Book Fair. I will also create and post videos showing students (that have approval to be on video) reviewing books and making book talks.

Animoto

Animoto is a free website where users can easily create videos from pictures and video clips. After adding their content, users can add captions to their photos, add text to slides, and include music for the background. This website is very easy to use and educators can apply for a free Educator's Account to make longer videos.

Here is the book trailer I made for the book Creepy Pair of Underwear by Aaron Reynolds using Animoto!
Book Synopsis from Publisher: Jasper Rabbit is NOT a little bunny anymore. He’s not afraid of the dark, and he’s definitely not afraid of something as silly as underwear. But when the lights go out, suddenly his new big rabbit underwear glows in the dark. A ghoulish, greenish glow. If Jasper didn’t know any better he’d say his undies were a little, well, creepy. Jasper’s not scared obviously, he’s just done with creepy underwear. But after trying everything to get rid of them, they keep coming back!

QR Codes

QR codes are a special barcode that is made to represent a link to a website, video, text, or picture. Users will need to have a QR Reader app downloaded on their device to use the code. Once the app has been downloaded, users can simply scan the QR code and it will take them to the content for that code. It is really easy to use and they are very simple to make.

Check out the QR code for the Creepy Pair of Underwear Book Trailer:
QR codes can be used in the library in a variety of ways. One way I already use them in my library is a way to advertise books. Students can use their phone or an iPad to scan the QR code to see a book trailer for that book or a recommendation by another student using a Flipgrid video. Another great way to use QR codes is for your library website. I am referring students, parents, and teachers to my library website all the time for the wealth of information on there. With a QR code, users can easily scan the code and get to the website without having to type anything in. I did this in the classroom as well with my contact information so that parents could easily save my email and phone number. Lastly, I plan to use QR codes in my makerspaces and library stations. For each station, there will be a QR code that the students can scan to watch/listen to the directions for that station.
